About Me

Hi! I'm Drew, but you've probably guessed that from the URL. I'm a game developer and researcher focused on visualizing and analyzing player interactions and creations, and using those insights to make targeted improvements, resulting in better, smarter games. I am fascinated by user-generated content in any form, from in-game artifacts, levels and puzzles, to peripheral content created for communities or social networks. I'm also interested in using player interactions within game environments and communities to develop models of player knowledge and proficiency. These models help adapt games to suit different players, and to guide them as they discover new strategies.

Long story short, I'm interested in using data to build games that learn with their players.

As a Ph.D Candidate/Research Assistant. I developed educational puzzle games in Unity3D to encourage creation and sharing of high-quality puzzles between players/learners. I developed multiple Level Editors with different incentives ranging from traditional gamification (points, leaderboards) to creative constraints.

The Center is home to three research groups: Dr. James Lester's Intellimedia group, Dr. Tiffany Barnes' Games+Learning Lab, and Dr. Kristy Boyer's LearnDialogue Group. All three groups are focused on improving the design and effectiveness of computer-supported or games-based learning tools.

"Design Tools and Data-Driven Methods to Facilitate Player Authoring in a Programming Puzzle Game"

My work focuses on how the multiplayer and community aspects of modern video games can be used to improve learning from Serious Games. My focus is on building creatively constrained authoring tools for a programming puzzle game, and evaluating how the design of these tools effects what players build. I am also interested in user authoring of hints and scaffolding, or user coaching through targeted authoring of puzzles. I have developed a game called BOTS with the goal of teaching basic programming concepts while evaluating these hypotheses. The topics of studies conducted or in progress with BOTS include:

  • Players must provide "target solutions." How does this effect the quality of submitted levels?
  • Can we automatically build and offer hints from these "target solutions?" How much data is needed to build reliable hints?
  • Is "traditional" Gamification effective at encouraging users to submit levels? What effect does it have on the quality of submitted levels?
  • Are "creative constraints" on the number/type of elements available effective at increasing the quality of submitted levels?

Prior to starting my Ph.D. at NCSU, I worked with Dr. Tiffany Barnes developing educational/serious games which used AI to adapt to the students playing them. These projects included SNAG'EM, a social scavenger hunt game/networking tool, and BOTS, a programming puzzle game for novice computer users.

At UNC Charlotte I participated in research on two large projects, and began work on what is now my main project.

  • Elemental: The Recurrence was a game built in C# (using XNA) designed to teach the concept of recursion to novice programmers. The game was built in a custom engine used in a previous FPS project, with substantial modifications to allow players to edit scripts within the game. Players wrote recursive programs to construct bridges and stairways, allowing them to navigate levels and collect objectives.
  • SNAG'EM: Connect The World is a web-based social networking game designed to help new students meet faculty mentors and advisors, or for use in other groups/communities where networking is very important. Players tag themselves with interests and skills, and are assigned missions to meet people with similar or complimentary interests and skills. SNAG'EM has been implemented as a networking tool both at academic conferences (FDG, CHI, EDM) and at Freshman Orientation for several colleges/departments at UNC Charlotte, Spelman College, and Winthrop University.
  • I began my current work on BOTS with a project called BugBots, an RPG developed in XNA which allowed players to solve simple programming puzzles using loops, functions, and arrays.
